I'm not familair with the Ti Launchpad. How would it compare to other micro-controllers like the Arduino Uno?

The TI Launchpad could be though-of as a professionals Arduino.  The Arduino is perfect for anyone not interested in a career in electronics or software engineering.  It's a great tool to get a quick project done.


The TI Launchpad is an professional tool supported by professional tools.  The Launchpad is actually cheaper than the Arduino, but it is considerably more powerful.  


You program the Arduino in a hobbyist language similar to C.  You program the TI Launchpad in real C.  TI has made programming in C so easy, anyone can really do it.


The TI MSP430G used in the Launchpad is used in automotive, industrial, medical, and consumer products around the world.  There is a very good chance that your microwave or washer/dryer has a TI MSP430G in it.  Your car almost definitely does. 


The free tools used with the TI Launchpad are professional tools.  These tools would normally cost thousands of dollars, but TI is giving them away to gain market share in the hobbyist market.  If you learn how to use Code Composer Studio (CCS), you can put it on your resume.


Do a monster search for Code Composer Studio, there are hiring engineering managers looking for people who know how to use these tools right now.  Time spent learning/mastering the TI Launchpad will actually help you start a career in engineering and/or computer science.


If you are not interested in a career in electronics or computers, than the Arduino is probably the best choice.  If you want to be an electrical or software engineer in the future, the TI Launchpad is the only way to go.
